Dante Garcia and his father, Ignacio Garcia, both natives of Peru, founded Columbus Futsal in 2006, mostly to organize street soccer pick-up games. The organization didn’t become affiliated with U.S. Youth Futsal or compete in professional leagues until 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Since then, the sport has taken off in central Ohio, said Malissa Galiffo Garcia, Dante’s wife and co-owner of Columbus Futsal, which includes a professional club, recreation leagues and a youth academy, totaling more than 1,000 youth and adult players.

You can describe Futsal as soccer on steroids.

It is played indoors on a pitch the size of a basketball court. It can also be played outdoors.

The ball that is used is smaller and heavier and does not bounce very much.

Footwork and speed is the name of this game. Futsal got its start back in the 1930's in Uruguay.

It has been very popular in South America and now it is catching on here in the United States.

After each Columbus Futsal goal, it is tradition for the attending members of the youth academy to run down the sideline in celebration, many of them waving flags and all of them wearing their league jerseys. The kids were tired just nine minutes into the game on Saturday evening as Columbus jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, including a hat trick by forward Gui Karaoglan.

If you are anything like me, when you talk to other people about soccer one of the main complaints you always hear is there “isn’t enough scoring.” Another one of my favorites is “the matches are too slow.” Those excuses are no longer valid as “the beautiful game” takes on a whole different meaning in Central Ohio with Columbus Futsal.
